Identity and Worth in Christ: Chosen and Secure
Share
I want to begin with something simple and honest. Most of us carry two identities. There is the one we post and perform, and there is the one we feel when the room gets quiet. Grades, bodies, careers, comments, and likes can feel like a scoreboard for our value. When the numbers look strong we feel tall. When they dip we feel small. The gospel offers a kinder way. God speaks a truer name over you in Christ, and that name holds when the scores change.
The very first chapter of Scripture tells us that human beings are made in the image of God. “So God created man in his own image” says Genesis 1:27. Your worth does not begin with achievement, romance, or reputation. It begins with creation. You bear the imprint of your Maker. David marvels, “You formed my inward parts” and “I am fearfully and wonderfully made” in Psalm 139. Before you do anything impressive, before you fix anything broken, you are already a person of God given value.
Because of sin we wander from God and from ourselves. Shame tries to write the last chapter. The Father answers shame with adoption. “To all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” says John 1:12. In Christ you are not an audition, you are a child. Romans 8 says we have received the Spirit of adoption and we cry, “Abba, Father.” You can exhale. You are wanted. You are not a guest in God’s house who must entertain to stay. You are family.
Your past may be loud, yet it is not Lord. “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation” writes Paul in 2 Corinthians 5:17. “There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” adds Romans 8:1. Condemnation says, “This is who you are, you will never change.” The cross replies, “This is what Jesus has done, you are free to begin again.” Forgiveness is not amnesia, it is a new beginning with God walking beside you.
Identity is not only about who you are, it is about what you are for. Ephesians 2:10 declares that you are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works that God prepared beforehand. Notice the order. Grace comes first, then good works follow. We do not serve to get an identity, we serve because we already have one. The world trains us to ask, “How far will this take me.” The kingdom teaches us to ask, “Whom can I love today.”
Many young adults tell me, “I believe God loves me, I just do not know if he still will after the next mistake.” Listen to the promise. “Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” says Romans 8:38 to 39. Not failure, not fear, not the future. God’s love is not a mood. It is a covenant sealed by the blood of Jesus and guaranteed by his resurrection. Your feelings may rise and fall. His love remains.
Here are simple practices that help move truth from your head into your habits.
-
Begin with the Source: Before you check your phone, pray a short prayer. “Father, my worth comes from you, not from today’s outcomes.” Read a single verse slowly. Try 1 Peter 2:9 or Colossians 3:3. Repeat it out loud.
-
Name the lie, answer with truth: When comparison whispers, “You are only valuable if you succeed,” answer, “I am God’s child in Christ” and quote Romans 8:1 or John 1:12. Scripture is not decoration. It is medicine.
-
Practice presence over performance: In class, at work, or on a date, choose to be curious and kind. Excellence still matters, yet you are not using people to collect worth. You are serving people from worth already secured.
-
Live sent: Each morning ask, “Who can I encourage today.” Send the text, speak the thank you, offer the seat, pray for the friend. Identity deepens when love moves outward.
When you forget
You will have off days. Do not spiral. Return quickly to God. Confess without drama, receive grace, and restart. Reach out to a spiritual friend or mentor and ask for prayer. Consider your inputs. If certain accounts inflame comparison, mute them for a season. Fill that space with Scripture, worship, and honest conversation. Then do one small act of service. Nothing untangles self focus like practical love.
Pray this before you go
Father, thank you for making us in your image and redeeming us in Christ. Quiet the noise of comparison and the lies of shame. Teach our hearts to trust your voice more than our feelings and more than our feeds. Let your love define us, and let that love flow through us today. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
